What is a National Qualifier and can any team race?

The United States Adventure Race Association capstone event for the year is the 24 hr National Race at varying locations each year. In order to race (in the open division) at Nationals, teams need to qualify via point system throughout the year. The Wild West will be an official qualifier for 2010, highest ranked teams will receive qualifying points and winning 4 person coed team will win $400 toward their entry free at Nationals. However, a race that is a qualifier is open to all teams for participation, beginners through advanced. This race will include all levels of competition and will be an amazing experience for teams just starting out.

What does “Wild West” really mean?

Can’t really give that away–sorry. Just know that mountain biking, running/trekking, canoeing/kayaking, orienteering and ropes will be the main focus. But the theme will be evident throughout, from the country covered to the checkpoints. It wouldn’t hurt to catch a rodeo or two prior and whatever you do, don’t forget your cowboy hat.

And the “ECO”?–with a prerace challenge required?

Adventure races were born from Eco–Challenges, coed team oriented endurance races involving non–motorized sports in the rugged outdoors. Some races even take it a step further and require all teams to participate in an Eco challenge prior to being cleared to race. Why? Because adventure athletes can give back to the areas that they enjoy while creating a positive impact for others in the future. The Wild West Eco requires an Eco-challenge be completed prior to race day. The Eco challenge is the team’s

choice with a few limits. Sometime from Jan 1st to Apr 30th, each team’s challenge is to work 1 hr per racer on an “eco” project that benefits the public.

How does a team complete the prerace challenge?

Projects that will be considered having met the challenge are things like blazing a new section of trail, providing major renovation to an older trail, doing a large clean up in an unmaintained area, building a natural obstacle on a mtb trail, fortifying trails or banks to prevent erosion, spearheading a recycling project, building or repairing a walk/bike bridge over a creek/ravine, etc. Projects that will not meet the challenge are: picking up trash in a semi-maintained area, clearing a few limbs from a popular trail, etc. Total time required doing the project is 1 hr/racer. If everyone in the team cannot participate, one team member can carry another (i.e. one teammate does 2 hrs, 1 for himself and one for another). Prove that your team has completed the challenge by emailing charmion with date of service, team name, racers and number of time spent doing what and contact name and phone number for project (i.e., park manager). If you haven’t finished this challenge and/or can’t find a project in your area, a new trail is going in next to Acorns Resort–just come to one of the trail clearing days or show up about 1.5 hrs early for prerace check in (with a hand saw).
