Near Miss in the YMCA Pool this morning.
I hit the pool at the YMCA this morning while my boys were in karate. I suveyed the pool and saw 4 lanes worth of swim lessons 2 full lanes and one lane with two ladies doing water aerobics? (playing jumprope with the noddles). So I took the last lane. This is normally the adult activity lane (ie water walking, etc) but there was no sign this morning and there was circle swim only sing either. So I hugged the lane line and provided plenty of space for folks to come join the lane. Did a HIM swim and got about 1000 in until it got interesting. A group of swimmers took over the water areobics ladies lane and not so politely asked them to move to my lane and just about the same time an old guy walking joined my lane. So the water aerobics ladies joined my lane and we all peacefully coexisted. Then another dude come to the lane after the ladies got out, watches me for a few laps and then joins in. Obviously, I’m splitting the lane and hugging the lane line up and down. Well imagine my surprise when I nearly have a head on collision with this dude coming back. “Come on Man.” was all I said. Lets just say he gave me plenty of space for the rest of the swim. It charged me up for the rest of the swim and…

10,000 Yards Complete
I had many people ask for a report, so here it is. Swim-A-Poolooza 2011 was a smashing success! We had 36 swimmers in total. Some did 100s, some did 75s and some did 50s, but all had fun! I think we had 8 swimmers in each of the lanes doing 100s, but because they’re all experienced team swimmers, there were no problems.
This was the 4th year I’ve organized this event and it grows each year. This is the first year we held the event at the Lemont Park District’s The CORE. What was amazing was that we only had 5 “repeat” participants from last year. This means we had 31 NEW swimmers this year! Thanks to Suzi S., we had great music playing throughout the 3.75 hours. Thanks to both Suzi and Chris S., participants were able to stay fueled and hydrated through the event without having to get out of the pool.
I’ve done this swim about 8 times since I’ve been out of college. As told by the smile on my face, this was the most fun I’ve had. Usually, there is a “dead” point somewhere around the 70-80 rep time frame. And this year, I thought I took out the first 10 way too fast! But it was fine. Aside from a little bit of pruny…

What I learned about nutrition in 2010
Two of the defining characteristics of First Endurance are their commitment to quality products and their persistent research and development to create the best products that work in real life race situations. They use nothing but the best, highest quality products. Their products are Gluten Free and contain no high fructose corn syrup. The three main components I was immediately drawn to were Ultragen (for recovery) and EFS

Rev3 Cedar Point: Race Report
Race morning had officially arrived. After a surprisingly good sleep, I was up, hit the bathroom and downed a bottle of EFS and some Clif Shot Bloks.
I decided that the whole day was going to be focused on two main ideas:
Take the whole day one mile at a time
Enjoy every mile of my only first Ironman
Those two mantras would end up driving me for the next 140.6 miles.
Other than a minor pre-dawn freakout in transition area. I was able to keep a pretty level head as I set up my bike, organized my transition area and filled up my nutrition bottles. I was pretty happy and surprised with my attitude. I’ve been a LOT more nervous for a LOT shorter races.
I’m not sure what it was, but I was just ready to race, get out there and start tearing up the course.
Heading over to the swim start and patiently waiting for the gun to go off. Sam was an amazing sherpa and helped me stay cool calm and collected up until the second I had to leave her and dive head first into the water. Just as I was starting to head through the start gate, she handed me her cell phone. It was my mom calling from Connecticut to give me some last minute last minute well wishes. Hearing how proud she was…

Megan’s Rev3 Cedar Point FullRev Race Report!
I was thinking about this post when I was finishing up the bike leg of the FullRev. I was thinking, around mile 95, of excuses I could make to tell you about why I got off the bike in T2 and never left with my running shoes on. I was construing various stories that left you with the feeling of “Oh, I get it” and “If that were me, I’d do the same damned thing.”
But before I tell you these stories, I should tell you the first one.
I considered not traveling to Cedar Point at all.
I got it in my head that leaving work for five days (weekend included), in the thicket of dissertation writing, and with two campus visits coming up (one in New York City, and the other in St Louis), I just couldn’t go. I needed to work on my slides for a lecture at Hospital for Special Surgery. I needed to go through Chapter One with a fine toothed comb so I could send it to my advisor for editing. I needed to write a manuscript on stuff I did this spring, finish a manuscript for stuff I’ve been working on for nearly two years, and work on the transitions between chapters 3-8 of my dissertation. It just didn’t make sense to leave right now. Not like this.
But Baberaham wondered why I would do that. My friend AJ was going down

The Loch ness Monster appears….
Out onto the beautiful bike course…
And how the heck did I manage a smile in that heat on that course?
And another smile up the dreadful last mile hill :<)
One of my favorite shots of all time…look at that smile on Joshua’s face, PRICELESS!
And finally done….Rev3 does things right…look at this finish line area!

Fat Otter Raid 3-day Adventure Race
One of our team members, Barb Blackburn, wrote up a comprehensive and humorous race report from our recent 3-day raid in Wisconsin. I’ve included it below, enjoy!
Established in 1957, the Black River State Forest encompasses approximately 68,000 acres of public land in Jackson County. The area’s geology helps make the Black River State Forest unique among the state forests. The property lies at the edge of the glaciated central plains, east of the “driftless” area of Wisconsin. Hiking to the top of Castle Mound provides views of the former bed of glacial Lake Wisconsin, as well as the unglaciated buttes, sandstone hills and castellated bluffs that dot the vast forest landscape.
The Fat Otter Raid 3-day race was held near Black River Falls, Wisconsin in the Black River State Forest. I was originally entered with my teammate Heff to run it as a 2-person team. A few days before the race, Heff had to withdraw. I e-mailed every racer I knew…and sent group messages out to the orienteering club, adventure racing group and the race director looking for a teammate. Just when I was about to give up my search, Dave from Team Trakkers called to talk about the possibility of racing on their team. After a few phone conversations and e-mails, I was very excited to find out I’d be joining their team! Our “Team Trakkers” (right to left) included Dave (team lead and superman navigator), Dennis (mountain…

Come race with us!
Well, Quassy was my second consecutive Rev 3 race with all of my Trakkers teammates. All I can say is that I’m thoroughly impressed. Impressed with Rev 3’s family friendly atmosphere, the big event feel, the pro field, the courses, and of course the swag. I’m also impressed with the quality of athletes and quality of people that comprise our Trakkers team. Their friendliness, enthusiasm and attitude have made my last two races incredibly fun experiences.
I am really glad I made the effort to get to them both and I’m having serious second thoughts about skipping the final Rev 3 race of the year at Cedar Point. It really doesn’t fit into my schedule very well and its more traveling, but I know it will be a complete blast. Maybe I’ll go watch, cheer and volunteer.
This weekend also gave Michele and I a new perspective on that end of a race. We (Michele, me, Robert from Terrier Tri, and a bunch of Trakkers teammates) manned an aid station at mile 1.5 of the run for Saturday’s Olympic Rev. We had a lot of fun and I don’t think it affected my race on Sunday at all. If you compete in triathlons and you’ve never volunteered at a race, give it a try. It will give you a new respect for all those people helping at your next race and I think you’ll find it extremely satisfying as well.…
