Race Report: OrangeMan

OrangMan Half Iron Triathlon Date: 9.25.11
Location: Dana Point (that is in Orange County)

This event was fairly local, a two hour drive north of San Diego, so it was a no brainer race to do. The timing fit pretty good with my schedule, giving me two weeks rest after my Rev3 Cedar Point iron distance triathlon (10:32). The two week recovery consisted of  about 5 hours of training which included  a hard work out as part of the November TCSD Club race. I did the full swim (approx 700 meters),  five hard miles of the12 mile bike, and a fast 2 miles of the 4 mile run. Everything felt good, seemed to be fully recovered from the iron race and ready to race OrangeMan.

I have to thank the guys at Finishline Multisport/3rd Transition for their assistance with race entry. The event promoters ended up offering a 50% off coupon on groupon.com to attract more athletes. Besides the triathlon, they offered an aquabike and swim only divisions. The more people the merrier. OrangeMan promoted itself to be a fairly challenging course. The bike course had 10 mile of rollers and then another 15 or so of consistent climbing before the turn around and heading back. I did review the run map on line and it seemed to be pretty typical.

Driving up to the expo the day before hand was very easy, missed out on the…

Ironman Wisconsin 2011 – the race that (almost) never was

It’s been a while since I’ve posted, so I’ll give a quick update.  I took the entire month of July off from racing to prepare for Ironman Wisconsin.  I reluctantly signed up for Steelhead in the middle of August and had a good race, despite the fact that the swim was cancelled.  And then it all started.

Two days after Steelhead, I was out on a very leisurely bike ride on a trail and took a hard fall when my front wheel hit a thick branch that was hidden between the shade and leaves on the trail.  I first thought it was my elbow that was going to give me problems, but on the drive home from that ride, I knew my shoulder took the brunt of the fall.  I went to the emergency room where they confirmed nothing was broken.  I was told I needed to be in a sling for 2 weeks with no activity.  I was able to ride indoors the next day and pushed my luck in the pool two days later.  It was extremely painful but I figured I’d have time to work it out before Wisconsin.

That weekend, I had 100 mile ride on the schedule.  My elbow was still really chewed up and I had a hard time in the aerobars between the road rash on the elbow and the pain in my shoulder with any pressure.  I was able to finish the…

Race Report: Encinitas Sprint Triathlon

Title Sponsor  - Avia

Date: 05.15.11
Location: Encinitas (San Diego), CA

Last year at this time I was racing the Rev3 aquabike Knoxville and coming off of cryosurgery for my plantar faciatis. This year I’m staying closer to home base and have finally starting to ramp up my running. I did this event a couple years ago so it will be a good test to gauge my recover,  training progress and compare to my previous effort here.

Saturday, I wason and off my feet all day at the festival expo (at the TCSD booth supporting the Tri Club and Oasis One-Twelve)… not complaining just giving some background. I normally would have been out for a long training ride but wanted to race with fresh legs. I did id not bring breakfast or lunch but was saved by theMix 1 for the samples they had available and some horrible tasting baked potato chips.

Working the expo allowed me to scope out the parking situation for race day… limited parking near the transition. So race day, up early and out the door by 4:15am.. Transition opened at 5:30 or so this assured me a prime spot in transition. Rack space were assigned by waves and my wave/age group was along the outer perimeter so no need to deal with finding my bike amounghts the masses during the race.

This was going to be a

3rd Place @ Ironman 70.3 South Africa

I usually go home to Australia in December, but this year, since I was getting married on New Year’s it made sense to stick around. This worked out pretty well, because I was able to get some training in December and January so that I could do an early race. South Africa is probably the earliest I’ve ever started my season, but I figured it was worth the trip. The location was awesome.

The day before the race, the waves were cranking on my warm-up swim. I thought I was going to get lucky and do some surfing for the race, but the next morning, the wind changed direction and the water was quite calm. Going into the swim, the water was freezing. It was probably the coldest water I have ever raced in and I’ve done 70.3 Oceanside for years. Despite that, I had a good swim and came out of the water in 3rd.

I was a little nervous going into the bike. Because of the wedding and a couple of bad weeks of weather in Austin I didn’t get in as many solid rides as I would have liked. I knew I was going to have to push hard on the bike to stay in contention. I ended up having a realy soild ride. My new Kestrel 4000 is just awesome. It really pulled me through. I also had a new nutrition plan for this year:…

Run for Regis Race Report

First off, I love this race!  This was the first time I have “raced” this new course and the first time I only did 13.  I was used to the old course on the Buckeye Trail.  I ran it in 2008 which was my first 50K, which I ran the majority with two of my close friends, Amie and Elizabeth!!!  Then in 2009, I killed myself in very snowy conditions to come up a little short as 2nd overall female.  2010, I signed up, only to sit out with a tibia stress fracture.  This yr, 2011 , I feared I was borderline tibia stress fracture re-occurence and opted to just do 13.1 (or 13.34 according to my garmin) and play it safe!

I think this was a good idea and I REALLY enjoyed my day!  My plan was to go out easy and just enjoy myself.  Yet, as usual we started off and the atmosphere caught up with me and I was running faster than planned!  We started off slipping and sliding through the snowy field.  My first thought was pretty much, holy sh!t, this is going to be some rough footing.  I was pretty much running at race pace, which for mile 1 was only 9:08 in that snow.  One of my training partners, CK, was just in front of me, and for some reason I just felt compelled to stick in that pack with 3 guys.  As

The Jacksonville Bank 1/2 Marathon Race Report

This past Sunday, I ran in the final race of the “Tri 2B Tuff Challenge” – the Jacksonville Bank Half Marathon. This was my third half marathon in approximately 75 days. You can read about my prior two races, The Jacksonville Marine Corps Half Marathon and the Outback Distance Classic Half Marathon here and here, respectively.

Coincidentally, while this was my last race for 2010 – this particular race happened to be a do-over of my very first half marathon ever. Way back in 2005, I ran this race with my friends Martin, Laura and Jeff. (Actually, Jeff ran the marathon that day and had a pretty darn impressive debut of 3:39!) I ran that race as unprepared and untrained as you could possibly ever run a half-marathon, and finished with a generally unimpressive 2:16. I recall walking considerably and having to be motivated by other runners to even finish the race.

Fast forward to this year. Entering this race, I’d had two pretty solid efforts in the Tri 2B Tuff Challenge. I had PR’d both races, and was making progress towards beating my personal demon – the two hour half marathon.

Throughout last week, my friend Martin had texted me that was thinking about running as well. On Saturday, he sent me a final text – he was in! So – race strategy changed…I was running with Martin. We’d push each other where

Tugs Tavern Reunion Run

Location: Mission Beach, CA
Weather: Overcast but great running
Distance: 5.1 miles not the 5.5 as noted, thank goodness.

4 starters. 3 finishers, Andy, Sandbar-bartender, Pedro-Sand Bar cook, and me.

Great beach run, low tide conditions so sand was nicely packed for cushioning. Running into the wind (south) slowed pace down quite a bit.

I started of pretty fast…probably too fast, held the lead for a few minutes then faded to second by the first turn around. Put in some surges in to retake the lead as we passed the start/finish line. Not having run tempo/fast evens since before Thanksgiving my endurance and speed was about all gone and I started to fade even more. At the second turn around (heading back into the wind), the leader now, Andy, continued to increase his lead. Eventually Pedro, caught up to me and I was able to keep ahead of him, until the last quarter mile where made his pass. I tried to stay with him but just did not have it in me.

Pedro, take 2nd with his holiday Cons.

This was a serious run/evaluation to scope out foot issues. Foot say ok, but not perfect and continuing to increase miles kinda say no go. Looks like 2011 will be a Aquabike year. Now I have to get in the pool and start chalking up the CompuTrainer miles.

Thanks Pat at Tugs-T for putting

Pilgrim’s Progress 4 Miler

This might be the first and possibly the last time I will ever get to do a Thanksgiving race in a pair of shorts, no gloves, and a ball cap.  Surprisingly warm for Thanksgiving but we also woke up to POURING rain.  I did not want to race in the rain.  We ate breakfast, packed up dry clothes for after the race and headed out.
We picked up our timing chips, hit the port-a-johns and then the rain stopped.  Sweet!  We did a little warm up and then we were ready to go.  This was our first time doing the Pilgrim’s Progress race having done two of the Thanksgiving races in town.  To date, this one ranks high.  Ample parking, good swag (more on that in a minute), decent course, and my favorite, a small racing field.
Side note….I had worn a lighter pair of socks because I didn’t want to have heavy wet socks during the race.  But, during my warm up my shoes kept “eating my socks” and one pair even wound up only around my toes.  So, I decided to do what I’ve never done and what I’ll never do again: race without socks.
I mentioned the swag before.  Each entrant got a nice race shirt and a pair of socks in their grab bag.  Both of mine fit.  YES!!!  Then for each age group there were awards which were a $75, $50, and

a bit late…but most of my race reports are..

Race: Fearless Triatlon
Date: 10.30.10
Location: Fiesta Island, San Diego CA

This was a local venue. The Tri Club of San Diego has many of their Club races here and I was fortunate to obtain an entry thru the Club. Weather for this weekend could make or break this event. Fortunately no rain the day before, so the swim is to be included.

What makes this event so special? It’s format….  a double super sprint – swim, bike, run and repeat. 250 meter swim, 5 mile bike and 2 mile run done back to back. 11 Split times, that includes transitions.

My warm up was the ride over in the am. When I showed up I was surprised to see how many people there were.  I picked up my packed on Friday and there ere not lots of people there so I was very suprised at the run out. I figured I would stroll in and easily find a prime spot to position my bike. Waves had assigned racks and I forced my bike into a great spot without disrupting others who probably arrive a half hour before me.

During set up sprinkles start to fall for the sky but not to bad. Air temperature and water temperature were about the same, thing about 62F or so. Since this was a double format race, I had my clothing/equipment strategy

Phelps School Cross race report

Eastern PA was treated to some incredible weather this past weekend.  What better way to spend a Saturday AM than with some friends / rivals on a TOUGH cyclcross course?  No one was there to shoot any pictures, but here’s a video from last year to give you some perspective: Phelps Cross 2009 Men\’s Cat 4 on Contour

I was on the fence about doing this race.  Last year the course didn’t suit my style all that much and wasn’t very technical.  It had some LONG power sections that ate me alive.  My friend Johan talked me into it, so we headed down to Malvern PA to check it out.  When we prerode the course and saw the changes we were both impressed.  It was a course that combined power with some climbing and cornering skills to really put the hurting on you!  I was racing with Johan, my training partner that has put the hurt on me many times before on a bicycle.  We were racing the Masters 35+ / 45+ which included riders from Cat 1 to Cat 4.  They were paying cash back to 7th place in our 43 man field, but I wasn’t worried about that…I wanted to prove the ever accurate race predictor at crossresults.com to be wrong.  Johan and I were predicted to finish 8th/9th respectively.

Temps were in the mid 50’s w/ bright sunshine for our 11am start.  I had a 2nd…
