Avi-Bolt II Review

I am really impressed with this shoe! I guess I should start by saying that like most people I’m a little nervous when it comes to change, especially when it comes to equipment or gear, but Avia made a great shoe with the Avia-Bolt II (and it’s on sale!!). It fits like a glove and offers the right amount of cushion, breathe-ability, and performance that athletes expect from their shoes. The shoes are exceptionally light at 8.5oz and for a guy just under 6 foot weighing 175lbs, a traditional “race flat” doesn’t always offer the padding I need for long course racing and my joints can really feel it. The air mesh upper allows for your feet to stay cool when pounding the pavement hard. This feature also allows for some of the weight that would normally be on the top of the shoe to be in the sole and cushioning.

Avia uses a guidance scale which takes into account arch type and pronation. Click here to learn more about this scale. These shoes are a “1″ on the Avia Degree of Guidance.

The black material has some shine to it which looks super awesome while you run, and is reflective in low-light conditions.

The shoe offers Avi-Grip heel and tongue, which at first I thought might rub, but because of the fantastic liner, there are no issues. This grip will allow for…

What I learned about nutrition in 2010

What I learned about nutrition in 2010

Being relatively new to the sport of triathlon (3 years), I always brushed over nutrition as “something I don’t have to worry about”. Heck, I was never taught anything about nutrition by a coach (never had one) and I wasn’t a big sweat loss guy, so it was one less thing to worry about. Sure, as I moved from Sprints to OLY’s and on to the half iron distance I would think about it and have a plan, but my plan was simple….take what’s on the course and carry an energy gel or something for the run. It seemed to get me through ok.

Well, in 2010 I was lucky enough to become a member of Team Trakkers. Team Trakkers had this wonderful nutrition sponsor, First Endurance and this wonderful website that had a wealth of information about nutrition. As I trained harder and longer, and raced harder and longer nutrition was turning into a bigger component than it had prior and now I was paying attention.

Two of the defining characteristics of First Endurance are their commitment to quality products and their persistent research and development to create the best products that work in real life race situations. They use nothing but the best, highest quality products. Their products are Gluten Free and contain no high fructose corn syrup. The three main components I was immediately drawn to were Ultragen (for recovery) and EFS

Sigh No More

I don’t really like to think of New Year’s as a special event. It’s just a day like any other, and frankly, I don’t do well with resolutions or “how I’m going to change my life in a day” hulabaloos. It’s the same reason why I don’t practice lent (that, and I’m not Catholic). But, even though I tend to disregard January first as a significant day of change, I do still have this feeling of starting afresh. Jan 1 (well, Jan 3, actually) marks the start of focused training, since I have attempted, and failed, thanks to the move, new employment, and holidays. I’ve struggled over the last few weeks to stay focused; I’ve struggled with coping with life.  I have been sleeping a lot, I have been lackluster about running, and that’s just not me. Frankly, being an adult sucks, and I want to get whisked back to the time (about three months ago) when I wasn’t concerned about having enough money (because I could just take out a student loan and I split rent with a roommate). Without getting too mopey about it all, I’ve basically struggled with being alone, broke, and overwhelmed.

But, I can exhale now. I have a roof over my head, I have been paid, and I have food in my cupboards. I’m finding my groove at my new job, I’m committing to training runs and swims, and I’ve found a few people…

New Year, New Strategy

You can imagine how depressed I’d be after spending 6 weeks without running and another 6 in a boot only to find out I was told I need ANOTHER 6 weeks in the boot.  I mean, seriously, I’ve had friends who have had foot surgery come back faster than this.  I don’t get it – I don’t feel like I even had a real injury!  And with the boot means not just no running, but there are a lot of things I’ve had to completely stop:  stair climbing, cross country skiing, push ups, lunches, plyometrics….need I go on?

So what is there to do?  Aside from a lot of time on the bike and one-legged flip turns in the pool, I’ve now focused on changing the diet up a bit.  I am now working on the Paleo diet – well, I’m trying!  I cannot believe how wierd it is to not have bread, rice, pasta, bagels, etc.  And I don’t think I’ve eaten this much meat since I even started this sport.  I actually bought a WHOLE chicken the other day.  It almost makes me gag thinking about it.  But we’ll see how this goes – I’m game to try anything once.  The real test will be to see what happens to my power numbers on the bike.  Last time I made a drastic change to my eating habits, I just about lost all power on the bike. …

Even the kids love First Endurance

Going through my son’s 8th grade cross country team pictures and I noticed a couple of shots of Adrain enjoying some EFS in a First Endurance Water bottle after his race.  How’s that for an unsolicited endorsement?

Phelps School Cross race report

Eastern PA was treated to some incredible weather this past weekend.  What better way to spend a Saturday AM than with some friends / rivals on a TOUGH cyclcross course?  No one was there to shoot any pictures, but here’s a video from last year to give you some perspective: Phelps Cross 2009 Men\’s Cat 4 on Contour

I was on the fence about doing this race.  Last year the course didn’t suit my style all that much and wasn’t very technical.  It had some LONG power sections that ate me alive.  My friend Johan talked me into it, so we headed down to Malvern PA to check it out.  When we prerode the course and saw the changes we were both impressed.  It was a course that combined power with some climbing and cornering skills to really put the hurting on you!  I was racing with Johan, my training partner that has put the hurt on me many times before on a bicycle.  We were racing the Masters 35+ / 45+ which included riders from Cat 1 to Cat 4.  They were paying cash back to 7th place in our 43 man field, but I wasn’t worried about that…I wanted to prove the ever accurate race predictor at crossresults.com to be wrong.  Johan and I were predicted to finish 8th/9th respectively.

Temps were in the mid 50’s w/ bright sunshine for our 11am start.  I had a 2nd…

Recap: 2010 “Sophomore” Season

It’s hard for me to wrap my head around the fact that my 2010 season is wrapped up. I’ve even had two weeks of my post-season do-whatever-I-want awesomeness, [which really hasn't been that awesome]. Racing this year has been a blast! In my second season as a triathlete, I raced more and improved from last year. And, I felt strong in the run of practically every race, which made me happy.

I set some lofty goals at the beginning of the season, and although I didn’t make them all, I’m happy with the level I’ve risen. Anyway, it’s time to reflect on what racing in 2010 brought me:

* Two more marathons are checked off my 50×50 list (Utah and Michigan)- I BQ’d in both of these, too. Although I didn’t reach one of my goals (another marathon PR), I am still incredibly satisfied with where my run has made it. In fact, although I didn’t PR in the open marathon, I broke my marathon PR in the 140.6 distance by over 30 minutes. And, I also shaved off a minute from my previous best time in the 10-mile.

* I ran the farthest I’ve ever run before, in a training run no-less. Although I was registered for my first ultra, I bailed because of sub-optimal health/stress levels. The ultra world is still there, and I’m striving to make it a to-do for 2011.

* I broke 11hrs in the…

USAT Nationals – Race Report

So Long Alabama…

USAT has a practice of holding their Age Group National Championship races at the same location two years in row.  This year was my second trip to Tuscaloosa, AL for this race.  I’ve learned to never say never, but I CAN say with reasonable certainty it will be a cold day in Tuscaloosa before I go back.  I’m sure AL is a sweet home and all (tip my hat to some incredible college football tradition), but it aint my home.  In fact, I’m amazed that literally millions of people choose to call the oppressive heat and humidity of the american southeast home.  They do know its a choice right?

Describing this year’s race is kind of complex.  There was a lot of crap swimming around in my head leading up to the race so if all my thoughts aren’t complete I apologize.  I’ll try to tie things together as best I can.  I wasn’t feeling all that great physically or mentally coming into this race and it was really weighing on my mind.  I really had no idea what type of performance to expect.  All season, I’ve wanted to knock this one out of the park, similar to two years ago in Portland.  But coming in I knew that wasn’t going to happen.  What I didn’t know was how far from that I would be??

Michele and I flew in Friday morning

Boulder 70.3 – Race Report

I’m not exactly comfortable saying this, but I’ve been having a pretty good year, so far.  I’ve been very happy with my results in nearly very race.  So why mess with a good thing, right?  Well, coach kind a wanted to experiment a little with this years Boulder 70.3.  The idea was if you’re always trying to push to your limits, sometimes you need to go over them just to be sure where they are.

In the past, I’ve felt like I’ve never been able to bike hard enough to damage my run.  Well, we’ve been working on my cycling quite a bit this year and I feel like I’ve made some significant improvements.  So, it was time to see if I could do some damage…

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!  If the picture above were taken about four hours later you’d see a giant mushroom cloud just left of center, ‘cause thats precisely where I blew up.  I can’t say I didn’t see it coming either.  I just didn’t feel real great all week and it carried over to race morning.  Neither my warmup jog nor swim felt good at all.  It might have been a bit of a hangover from racing in Omaha the weekend prior.  Or I might have been just dreading the long HOT run course that Boulder always brings.

Regardless, things got off to a fine start.  I was pretty happy with my swim.  It didn’t seem
