Race Report: OrangeMan

OrangMan Half Iron Triathlon Date: 9.25.11
Location: Dana Point (that is in Orange County)

This event was fairly local, a two hour drive north of San Diego, so it was a no brainer race to do. The timing fit pretty good with my schedule, giving me two weeks rest after my Rev3 Cedar Point iron distance triathlon (10:32). The two week recovery consisted of  about 5 hours of training which included  a hard work out as part of the November TCSD Club race. I did the full swim (approx 700 meters),  five hard miles of the12 mile bike, and a fast 2 miles of the 4 mile run. Everything felt good, seemed to be fully recovered from the iron race and ready to race OrangeMan.

I have to thank the guys at Finishline Multisport/3rd Transition for their assistance with race entry. The event promoters ended up offering a 50% off coupon on groupon.com to attract more athletes. Besides the triathlon, they offered an aquabike and swim only divisions. The more people the merrier. OrangeMan promoted itself to be a fairly challenging course. The bike course had 10 mile of rollers and then another 15 or so of consistent climbing before the turn around and heading back. I did review the run map on line and it seemed to be pretty typical.

Driving up to the expo the day before hand was very easy, missed out on the…

Race Report: Rev3 Portland

Date: July 10, 2011
Location: Portland (actually Blue Lake Park and local communities)

Did my preflight bike check and prepared nutritional needs a couple of days ago.

Now it get ready time…. pack, travel, race and recover

Pack….

check.

Grabbed the SuperShuttle to the airport nice and early Friday am and arrive in Portland by 11am. Pick up the rental car and head to Vancouver for lunch at Subway and hit Walmart for some food supplies. New trick on not purchasing a foam cooler… Bring or purchase quality outdoor trash bags and a bag of ice. The quality bags are water proof and big enough to hold your supply of perishables such as yogurt, water, orange juice. It’s my newest travel cost saver. Also the Walmart parking lot is a great place to but the bike back together.

Portland airport (PDX) to Vancouver via the 205 is a quick 15 minute drive then over to the race venue at Blue Lake Park another 15 minutes. Total drive millage for this trip was only 35 miles or so. One of the shortest and easiest race logistics ever.

Since I was planning (and did) volunteer at race registration on Saturday, I had a volunteer/staff parking pass so I was able to park very close to the expo site. The remainder of the day was utilized to check out sections of the bike

Race Report: Encinitas Sprint Triathlon

Date: 05.15.11
Location: Encinitas (San Diego), CA

Last year at this time I was racing the Rev3 aquabike Knoxville and coming off of cryosurgery for my plantar faciatis. This year I’m staying closer to home base and have finally starting to ramp up my running. I did this event a couple years ago so it will be a good test to gauge my recover,  training progress and compare to my previous effort here.

Saturday, I wason and off my feet all day at the festival expo (at the TCSD booth supporting the Tri Club and Oasis One-Twelve)… not complaining just giving some background. I normally would have been out for a long training ride but wanted to race with fresh legs. I did id not bring breakfast or lunch but was saved by theMix 1 for the samples they had available and some horrible tasting baked potato chips.

Working the expo allowed me to scope out the parking situation for race day… limited parking near the transition. So race day, up early and out the door by 4:15am.. Transition opened at 5:30 or so this assured me a prime spot in transition. Rack space were assigned by waves and my wave/age group was along the outer perimeter so no need to deal with finding my bike amounghts the masses during the race.

This was going to be a

Race Report: Ensenada Half Marathon

Well I have to admit there is a lot of fear mongering about crossing the Southern border. If one stays on the beaten path and participate in “normal” activities experiencing a foreign country is quite enjoyable. It’s been about year or so since being in Mexico last. Lately my infrequent trips south have only been for breakfast/lunch at one of Baja California’s famous restaurants, La Fonda. The drive down for SD  offers great views of the pacific ocean and various “3rd World” towns along smooth toll roads.

I heard about this event, Ensenada half marathon, about a week ago and was offered a ride share down to the race (with fellow TCSDer Greg S.)… had to take advantage of the offer. No fancy website,  just a basic web page that gave date, time and location. I read a few blogs from others who had participated in the past. Many running events in Baja California are free of charge and offer prize money, not chips, no computers. This event fit my budget perfectly.

The drive down was pretty eventless,  arrive early to get a grounding of the area. Parked about 2 block away for race central, Sullivan Sports Complex. The complex has a great cushioned track as part of the facility.

Since no web page/site, I had no idea what the course was like, but no worries. It was just time to get an intense run workout and

EFS – Energizing Sports Drink review

What is EFS:  Electrolyte Fuel System.

It comes in two formats powder/drink and liquid shot format. This write up will be about the drink/powdered format.

I have only once previously tried with 1st Endurance  and have finally purchase a full 25 serving bucket to use long term. For me, I think the 25 serving will last about 2 months or about 800 miles of  riding. I’m gonna try to track how long it really last. I am three weeks in on the Fruit Punch flavor. I have heard the Grape flavor is great (that will be my next purchase)

just lost my write up… have to do it again..sucks!

I decided to forego my usual hydration/electrolyte mixture and go all the way for this weekend’s race, Showdown at Sundown, with Fruit Punch flavor of 1st Endurance EFS.

Benefits/ Features of EFS

  • highest electrolyte content – over 1000mg compared to 162 to 430mg per 12 ounces.
  • prevents cramping and dehydration
  • mix at varying strengths (just about all powders are)

Other info (per 12oz)

  • 96 calories
  • 200% DV of vitamin C
  • 16g of sodium
  • 24g of carbohydrates

What are electrolytes (salts)? Calcium, potassium, sodium, and magnesium) and anions (of chloride, carbonates, aminoacetates, phosphates, and iodide). These are nutritionally called macrominerals. These are lost through perspiration or other forms of dehydration, particularly in heat stress situations.

Why are electrolytes important? They allow cells to generate energy, maintain

Out of my “funK”

Yep, it happens to everyone now and them. My was caused by the unsercity of running again due to plantar fasciitis.

But I my foot issues have subsided massively and I am feeling very happy about my prospect of running “fast” again.

How did I get out of this funk? I discovered Promassages.com RunnerMassage Pro at the Carlsbad marathon expo.  I used at the expo after the race ( I did the half) and the next day my foot felt great. Only my L foot was having issues. I have been able to increase my running  miles and on track to be able to increase my training to compete in more iron distance events… as in Rev3 Cedar Point.

I am using the device 3 times a day for a bout 4 minutes each session.

here is my video/review.

Got Plantar?

Tugs Tavern Reunion Run

Location: Mission Beach, CA
Weather: Overcast but great running
Distance: 5.1 miles not the 5.5 as noted, thank goodness.

4 starters. 3 finishers, Andy, Sandbar-bartender, Pedro-Sand Bar cook, and me.

Great beach run, low tide conditions so sand was nicely packed for cushioning. Running into the wind (south) slowed pace down quite a bit.

I started of pretty fast…probably too fast, held the lead for a few minutes then faded to second by the first turn around. Put in some surges in to retake the lead as we passed the start/finish line. Not having run tempo/fast evens since before Thanksgiving my endurance and speed was about all gone and I started to fade even more. At the second turn around (heading back into the wind), the leader now, Andy, continued to increase his lead. Eventually Pedro, caught up to me and I was able to keep ahead of him, until the last quarter mile where made his pass. I tried to stay with him but just did not have it in me.

Pedro, take 2nd with his holiday Cons.

This was a serious run/evaluation to scope out foot issues. Foot say ok, but not perfect and continuing to increase miles kinda say no go. Looks like 2011 will be a Aquabike year. Now I have to get in the pool and start chalking up the CompuTrainer miles.

Thanks Pat at Tugs-T for putting

Project Bike: Kestrel 4000 Bike Fit, prt 3

So now I have the Kestrel 4000 all adjusted and ready to put it and me thru the paces. Shifter/aero bars were still way too far out, but I marked a maximum hand reach position for these test rides. Also, I did not have a correct size stem, so I rode with the Specialized fit stem system, making sure it was all bolts were securely fastened for it is labeled not for outside use.

Test ride 1: Fiesta Island 40K
This is my home turf TT ride. TCSD club races are held here, TCSD bike workouts and quite a few local events use the island. Earlier this year I have been training on it with my supped up mountain bike. I have only done a handful of full rides here on my road or TT bike. Easy ride over to the island and gauging the wind, seemed pretty light which is great for PR. Fiesta Island is known for having every changing wind conditions; one day dead still the next head winds on the back side and sometimes getting head wind on both sides…. very hard to duplicate the conditions.

Earlier this year, April, I part took in my first time trail, that is no swim or run… just biking. Time trialling is quite a bit different from a triathlon. One needs to pedal harder… more power, no need to conserve energy. An efficient pedal stroke is not need – maximum power all the time. That day, the wind was blowing pretty
